Industry: Internet & Online
Press Release Summary: Privacy is no longer an automatic reality. In fact it is the opposite. To be spied on is the norm of living in the Information Age, if you use banks or the internet.
Press Release Body: Jewel Versus NSA.
A logo designed for Electronic Frontier Foundation highlights the current legal battle being fought in the American courts, Jewel versus NSA. In 1990 a group of concerned citizens formed EFF and are now demanding that those who authorized, or participated in a warrantless dragnet which put millions of regular Americans' emails under surveillance. An ex-employee of NSA, told of a secret room in San Francisco, where copies of communications and communication records of all Internet Traffic were sent to. Those being prosecuted by EFF includes President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Chief of Staff David Addington, former Attorney General and White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales and others, as well as NSA. General Michael Mukasey, US Attorney General, while adamantly denying the existence of the fishing expedition dragnet, asked that Congress pass the bill giving immunity to any company involved in spying.
Bank Scandal InEurope.
A CD was sold to the German intelligence Service, be an ex-employee of a Lichenstein bank, in February. On it were the account details of foreigners who held foundation accounts in the bank. The 'Iron Lady' Angela Merkle, Germany's Exchequer, acted on behalf of the government, when it paid between $6 - $7.3 million for the stolen information. They were under the mistaken belief they would recover hundreds of million dollars of lost tax revenue. The list contained names of Americans, Spaniards, French, Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders, Italians, Finns and Swedes. Names which were turned over to their respective governments, allegedly for some undisclosed amounts of money. The bank states the information was misappropriated and therefore sold unlawfully.
Spies In Cyber Space
Spying in the information business threatens to rise to new heights. Internet Service Providers hold all their users' secrets, relationships, conversations, acts and omissions. Up until now ISPs have left the spy business well alone, probably because they did not have the tools necessary to be invasive spies. However, with the recent advances made in eavesdropping technology, ISPs can spy on people in ways never before attempted.
Service Providers are under pressure to sell the secrets of their users to copyright owners and advertisers. From a recent surge of reports, it seems that the ISPs are giving in to the enticement to sell the information. They have been experimenting with new forms of spyware. This could be the start of a storm of unprecedented and insidious ISP surveillance.
While privacy used to be something every individual was guaranteed of, this is no longer the case. Google alone has the capability of scanning 1 trillion unique URL's per day. Internet traffic and information has become one of the world's most wanted and valuable commodities.
